WHY THIS BOOK EXISTS

What does it cost a man to stop expecting more from himself?

Not every loss is dramatic. Sometimes it happens quietly: the standards you once protected become negotiable, your appearance stops reflecting your ambitions, and convenience begins to dictate your choices. You can be accomplished, respected and busy—and still recognise that something in the way you show up has fallen behind.

The Cost of Looking Casual is not a manual telling every man to wear a suit. It is an invitation to examine the decisions that shape how you present yourself, what you tolerate and the example you set. Clothing is part of the conversation. Your standards are the real subject.

The question isn't simply what you wear. It's what you are willing to settle for.

THE STORY BEHIND 11:11

A DATE THAT CHANGED MY DIRECTION.

On 11 November 2007, I began the business journey that would take my work across continents, cultures and different ideas of elegance. It became the starting point of the professional philosophy behind this book.

The number 11 is personal to me. This edition honours that beginning and the value of recognising a turning point. You do not need to believe in signs to understand the importance of deciding that the time has come.

INSIDE THE BOOK

NOT ANOTHER BOOK ABOUT WHAT TO WEAR.

A perspective shaped by years spent observing how men dress, carry themselves and adapt to changing responsibilities. The book explores the distance between what we are capable of and the standards we choose to practise.

THE INVISIBLE MAN

What happens when your capability is substantial, but your presence no longer communicates it? Explore the difference between being accomplished and being perceived with intention.

THE COST OF CONVENIENCE

Comfort has its place. But when convenience becomes the default in every decision, what happens to discipline, consideration and pride in how we show up?

ELEGANCE IS A DECISION

Elegance is not a price tag, a designer label or a nationality. It is judgment: understanding proportion, context and the responsibility to choose deliberately.

For the man who suspects he has outgrown his habits—and is ready to reconsider them.

INSIDE THE BOOK

FOUR CHAPTERS. FOUR QUESTIONS.

What have we lost? What have we accepted? What have we become? And what are we prepared to change?

CHAPTER 02THE GOLDEN AGETHE HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVEElegance was not the preserve of the wealthy. It was part of everyday expectations, passed from one generation to the next. Which standards deserve to be carried forward?
CHAPTER 04THE COLLAPSEWHEN APPEARANCE REPLACED SUBSTANCESpeed, trends and the pursuit of visible success changed the way men define themselves. What happens when a man’s achievements grow faster than his character?
CHAPTER 06THE INVISIBLE MANTHE EMOTIONAL TURNING POINTTalent, responsibility and ambition can remain unseen when a man stops expressing who he is. This chapter asks what it means to reclaim presence without chasing attention.
DÉSIR DU BIEN FAIRETHE DESIRE TO DO WELL.
CHAPTER 11EDUARDO XAVIERTHE PHILOSOPHYA personal reflection on doing things well, on developing standards by choice, and on finding an identity of your own rather than borrowing someone else’s.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR & THE EDITION

EDUARDO XAVIER

For 19 years, Eduardo Xavier has worked across menswear, personal image consulting, tailoring and personal branding. His professional journey has taken him through Portugal, Australia, the United States, Mexico, Spain and New Zealand—six countries across three continents.

From advising individuals on how they present themselves to creating tailored wardrobes, his work has led to one enduring belief: image is not simply about clothing. It is about authority, elegance, presence and consistency—the foundations of The European System™.

In The Cost of Looking Casual, Eduardo turns that experience into a wider reflection on the standards men live by, not just the garments they choose.
